Ecological Impact
It is really common for us the consumption of sucrose or table sugar because it's present in a lot of products, but we rarely think of the damages that the production of it includes. According to the Work Wildlife Fund (WWF) approximately 145 million tons of sugars are produced in 121 countries every year. And a report made by WWF demonstrated that sugar may be responsible for more biodiversity loss than any other crop. The production of it involves the destruction of habitats, the use of agricultural chemicals and the polluted waste of water, that is obtained after the production process.
During the preparation of cane, the topsoil is stripped losing any protective cover allowing it to dry out. Essential microorganisms and mass for fertility are impacted by this acts. Besides, the removal of cane continuously from the fields helps to reduce fertility making the growers to opt for the use of more fertilizers.
The processing damages water because of the fertilized soil. While in the mills, the enormous quantities of plant wastes and the process of washing in bodies of water creates the death of thousands of species when ending with the oxygen. Also, during the process flue gases, soot, ash, ammonia and other substances are released.
